Medical Websites

Missed our Library Learning Series on finding reliable health information online? Here's the highlights:

How do know I need a medical website and not a doctor?

  • Are you or someone you know not breathing?
  • Are you or someone you know bleeding (internally or otherwise)?
  • Are you or someone you know missing a limb or body part?
  • Are you or someone you know looking for more in-depth information about a pandemic, illness, disease or other health-related topic?

How do I know which I need? Local or national?

How do I know which website is best for me?

Some of you hard-core library fans may have noticed a few changes in our Library Lounge display recently. You may be wondering "COMIC BOOKS!?! In the LIBRARY!?!" That's right, folks. K-State at Salina recently starting adding graphic novels to our Lending Fiction collection. You can find the hottest new releases for such such caped crusaders as Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and the Fantastic Four, not to mention our favorite villains Atlas, Joker, Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Scarecrow. Look for coming additions throughout the rest of the summer. Don't see your favorite character? Let us know and we'll look into ordering it in the next round.

Think we shouldn't have "comic books" in our academic library? Stop by our display and read the posted articles on how these marvels (sorry, bad pun) are helping to increase literacy around the world. Check out one of the articles here.

2009 African American Read-In

Thanks to all the faculty, students and staff who made this event a success! We had 35 readers who read from a wide variety of historical, poetic and short-story works all by African-American authors, in a constant stream from 9am to 3pm. Whether you read aloud, supported readers by attending and listening or encouraged others, we appreciate your participation.

First myLibrary video

Because we at the library are always interested in learning how people perceive and use the library, we had our student workers start a project called "myLibrary" by making video essays. They could use any photos/ideas/expressions/themes they wanted, as long as it had to do with the library and their thoughts on it. This is the first video to be produced, so look forward to more coming in the spring. Enjoy and let us know what you think!

(It might take a minute or two to download but be patient!)

Here it is, folks! The "K-State at Salina Library: Now and Then" movie spectacular spectaculum! (Which means "spectacle" or "show", from the the Latin word "spectacular" and is just darn fun to say!) It highlights all the major renovations/changes the K-State Library has been through in years past, including all the location and name changes.

E-Journals: Everybody's doing it

Want to read your favorite magazine without trekking to the library?

Due to the increasing number of magazines and journals that are going to digital formats-only, K-State Salina is happy to offer to students and staff a tutorial on how to access e-journals, both those publications still offered in print and those that are now offered solely online. Enjoy!

First full-featured film

This is the long-awaited trailer for the K-State Salina Library, courtesy of GarageBand and iMovie. We've been waiting for some of the remodeling/moving to be done to include it in the movie. And because Heidi has seen what these two applications can do, look for more films (both the educational and entertaining kinds) in the future! Enjoy!

Exciting news!

Hello everyone! My name is Heidi Blackburn and I have been hired as the new Reference and Instruction Librarian here at K-State Salina. I have a B.A. degree in Business Administration from Truman State University and recently graduated from Emporia State University with my Master’s of Library Science degree. Starting this fall, I will be teaching students how to use databases and advanced search techniques by visiting Expository I and II classes, as well as other classes, so don’t forget to say hi if you see me running across campus. (But don’t wave your hands and distract me, as I’ll probably trip and spill all my handouts!) I will also try to answer all the reference questions you might bring to the library so don’t hesitate because my office door is always open. I look forward to trading jokes and research advice with all of you! :D

What is "The Library Minute"?

"The Library Minute" is a biweekly, 60 second podcast, screencast, or vodcast highlighting new information tools, search functions, websites, and up and coming technology. The hustle and bustle of everyday life makes it nearly impossible to keep up with the "new", but now you can obtain professional development in under a minute!
